A little bit more planning on our proposed route next year. These will be the major roads only at this stage.

When we get up around Port Hedland we will make the decision if we will keep going right around or turn back although it would not be a huge difference in distance to keep going.

The other consideration is whether to head down to Alice and Uluru from Katherine or to make that a seperate trip up through Suth Aussie another time.

Big thing with this trip now is we have decided not to take Penny and Daisy with us. Our daughter is going to look after them. This will make a huge difference in places we can go and see.

Early days but the excitement is kicking in already.

Lance wants us to call in at his place as well.

Also want to revisit Lakeland and Cooktown. Been over 50 years since I was there. I want to show Maggie where my mate Pete and I lived in an old lean to tent on the banks of the Annan River for six months in 1969.

It still is Lakeland Downs, take no notice of me

I think the fellow who was there then went broke, Foyster from memory, I think he got a disease in the crop and he went broke.
There always was a lot of people go down to Archer point, to go camping, but the national parks are trying to stop them now.
I have done a some fishing of the rocks there but mainly from my boat.

There have been moves to stop camping there for quite some time now I believe. One of the windiest places in the country.

Did you know that Archer Point is one of the few places where the Barrier Reef actually comes right into the coast.

My mate Pete had one of the largest sea shell collections in Australia back in the 70’s and used to collect there.

On the zero tides you can actually walk out on the reef itself just south of where the old lighthouse was. Didn’t have long though as once the tide turned it used to really rush in quite quickly.

I have some fond memories of the place.

It is pretty country.
I'd like to do one more trip up there.
Not as far as the tip.
Just to Lakefield NP and do some careful fishing.
Caught a few in the Little Annan behind the Lions Den.

We used to sit out the back of the Lions Den with a rifle shooting wild pigs as they came down to eat mangoes fallen off the trees. It was a pretty wild place still back in the 60’s. Grin

Sometimes life just sucks!!

We have had to delay our departure at this stage.

As many of you know when you get a bit long in the tooth, medical issues often take precedence. Nothing major but time consuming.

See how we go later in the year. There are still cyclones playing around in the north so a departure delay is maybe a good thing!

Well the beginning of this trip was five nights at the Glenreagh Recreational Ground for a get together. Had a meal for Maggie’s birthday at the Golden Dog Pub.

Great little campsite for $25 with power a night and an amazing town.

Was a funny day.

We were originally intending to go into Walcha however last night decided we would head down the highway to Newcastle then cut across and down behind Sydney.

Then this morning a few minutes before we were to leave I said to Maggie let’s stick to our plan and go down to Walcha.

We got to Armidale at 1.00 pm and I said, let’s go as far as Bendemeer today. Got to Bendemeer and we talked about whether we really did want to go to Walcha.

Well in the long run we just kept going and now are all tucked up at Chaffey Dam in the Peel Valley below Tamworth.

This is a nice spot we have visited before. Great amenities block with $2 showers and a dump point.

$5 a night per person to stay so have paid for two nights.

Tonight we have pulled into the Bylong Recreational Park. $10 donation for the night.

Toilets, hot showers and a dump point.

Lots of cows for company.

Nice old stone church on site. Pity we cannot see inside.

Last time we drove through here many years ago the shop over the road was still a going concern but like a lot of these little tiny towns they just cannot keep going.

Last nights stop was on the banks of Lake Wallace at Wallerawang. Staying two nights.

They have amenities with hot showers, drinking water and a dump point here. Not our first time here.

We have water views unless someone parks in front of us.

Have booked a site for a week from next Tuesday in a caravan park at Bermagui. Taking advantage of their pay for 4 nights and stay for 7 nights.

It is 7.30 and and outside the current temp is minus 3.9 but feels like minus 6.5 degrees. The heater has it at 16 so far inside and warming further.

Went to a place today that I have always wanted to visit, the remains of the old Cowra Prisoner Of War Camp.

Left me with a very weird feeling to imagine all that must have happened here.

Didn’t travel too far today. Now set up at a self contained free camp in Yass called Joe O’Connor RV Park on the banks of the Yass River. No real facilities apart from rubbish bins.

Just staying the one night then heading further east.

Went for a walk around this park and took some piccies. Lot’s of nice areas to camp along the river. Some people fishing in canoes and off the bank but water is dirty and no sign of fish.

Nice little concrete boat ramp as well.

Well the fog cleared so we moved on but got a few kilometres from Yass and it closed in again, so was a slow trip but now arrived at Braidwood.

Stopping the night in the RV Park which is the carpark of the Servicemen’s Club. It is a free camp.

Would have gone to the club later for a drink however it is closed on a Monday. Roll Eyes

Who remembers the show River Cottage way back in 2013 that was filmed here at Central Tilba. It did run for several years.

It was hosted by Chef Paul West who was supposed to be setting a farm up to be self sufficient. Grew his own veggies as well as ate pigs, cows and chooks that he had bred.

In fact it was a TV Show and most of that never occurred. It was however a great show.

We went for a drive today to look at the old farm which is now an Airbnb.

You cannot drive to it as the gate out on the road is locked but here are a couple of photos I took from the road.

Kev, you most likely remember half of the show was Paul cooking in the old farm kitchen, or out and about.

He did eventually write a cookbook featuring the recipes from the show.

Weather came in early. Was up at 3.30am putting the awning down as the wind came away. Maggie and I have got it down pat now, only takes us a few minutes. Screw in pegs make things easy.

Just on daylight a shower struck.

Quite overcast now but no rain forecast today.

On the way home called into the Bodalla Dairy. Have never been fussed on their cheeses but the fresh milk sure bought back memories when we were on the dairy as a kid.

Don’t you just love the size of that fireplace. Had a fire in it as well.

Then down to Eden to visit the old KIller Whale Museum that his about the Orcas that helped the whalers round up the whales.

Very disapointed there as I went there around 20 years ago and it seems most of the old displays have gone.

Still worth a visit though.

Look at those big cast iron pots similar to a Potje pot that the rendered the whale oil in.

That is a shame about the whole fish
the same thing the other day when I went to the fish factory
very little whole fish plenty of filleted fish and big tubes of
fish frames for sale.

Been threatening rain here for a few days but we only have had one small shower so far. Was 10 degrees at 6.00 am and only expecting max of 15 today.

Have just booked 7 nights starting Tuesday at the NRMA Holiday Park at Jindabyne. Expect it will be cooler up there. Mind you the diesel heater keeps it toasty inside.

Will be checking out the snow fields although very little snow has fallen so far this year.

Have decided to travel up over the dreaded Brown Mountain that I have heard so much over the years. Going to be interesting particularly if it rains as predicted.

Home for the next 7 nights. Took the photo of motorhome and turned around and took the other two of the lake.

Maggie is filling the washing machines. One of the better laundries we have come across.

Can see snow on the high peaks but not much snow in the next weeks forecasts. Weather very bleak. Currently 6 degrees.

Park is nearly empty. Snow season starts officially on 8 June apparently.

On these cool evenings there is nothing better than a hearty stew. Beef, potato, carrot, onion, swede, celery, parsnip, butter beans, dash of port and some beef stock.

Went for a drive to Thredbo. Was raining and low cloud so didn’t see much.

Wild deer are everywhere up there and there were quite a few dead on the road from vehicles I expect.

Was surprised to see these out in the open.

Wild deer and kangaroos living in harmony. Maggie took the photo out of the car window with my phone.

Same here Aart. I got invited to a free stay at the Borumba Deer park near Imbil way back when on the proviso I write an article in a camping magazine. Was back before this forum existed.

While I was there they gave me two red deer rumps to try. Mind you a rump on a red deer isn’t that big.

I made a pocket in them, put in a can of smoked oysters then wrapped them in bacon.

How was it? Well to be honest, it wasn’t that good. Even with the streaky bacon wrap to try and retain some moisture it was still very dry. Possibly overcooked but I do not particularly like meat to be underdone.

Very wet in the mountains today so we drove into Cooma to do some “Op Shopping”. Yes, we still turn over the op shops in new towns.

Nothing special found though and Vinnies clothing prices are still more expensive than new at Kmarts. 😊

Overall this trip I haven’t bought one single item from an op shop and Maggie has only picked up a few craft things.

Maggie had an argument with staff at one place as they had an old vintage sewing machine however were using it as a display and not for sale. They were told they should be ashamed of themselves as people donate things on the understanding it will get sold/given to someone else. Grin

I have tried eating kangaroo twice. Don’t like the taste at all.

Maybe too much smelling them while skinning them in my younger days.

The second time I even cooked it in a vindaloo curry sauce and still couldn’t disguise the kangaroo flavour. Cheesy

Went for a drive out to Lake Eucumbene today. Have never been to the dam wall end of the lake before however have fond memories of reading about Vic McCrystal, John Bethune and Rod Harrison catching good trout there in the old days of the Australia Angler magazines.

Would have liked to have gone further however just as we got to the wall there was a ping from the dash telling me of low fuel. Yep, in my excitement to get there didn’t fill up before we left. Grin

Was great though to see the wall and all the old fishing lodges set amongst the trees on the banks of the dam.

Water is quite low.

Our first day of sun over the lake. Looks beautiful. Still cool though at 4.7 degrees.

Really feel for the hundreds who have travelled here for the long weekend for the start of the snow season. The snow cams are showing no snow with very little man made snow even.

An untimely end has come about to this leg of our 2024 journey.

Maggie’s lower teeth bridge has come out and cannot be even temporarily fixed locally so we are headed for home.

With friends at Old Junee tonight then tomorrow up the Newell Highway to home.

Bad timing for it to happen but the good thing is being retired and not stuck to timings we can just up and head home.

Will be home on the weekend all going well.

Tis a bit chilly outside. That ‘feels like’ minus 5.2 is waaaaaaay down.

No wonder it took a while for the heater to make any difference in here. At least I have a remote control for it and didn’t have to get out of bed to turn it on.

Have drawn up our last trip plan on WikiCamps. Was an interesting time albeit cut short. As you can see basically a big circle with home being the blue dot.

When we left the only two confirmed stops were the COG at Glenreagh and a friend’s farm at Old Junee. Both in NSW.

Have a specialist dental appointment this Thursday which should give us some idea if we can get away again soon.

Well after a crap year with medical issues that destroyed our round Australia Trip we currently have a window clearance up until early December with no medical appointments.

So planning underway to bolt within the week or so.

We are looking at heading north up as far as the Whitsundays then down through central Qld towards the COG in October. Could go further north than that but will see how we go.

Have the puppies booked into their holiday home at our daughter’s place and looking at what we need to take with us.

Feeling excited. Cheesy

Maggie and I tucked into a top dinner earlier. Steak & kidney with mashed spud and brussel sprouts with a nice glass of merlot.

I did cook up the steak & kidney before we left home though.

There was a particular reason for wanting to come here to Seal Rocks.

In my younger days around 16 & 17 I worked as a deckhand on a charter fishing boat and a fishing trawler out from Port Stephens.

We did a lot of fishing out wide of here and I had only ever seen the Seal Rocks Lighthouse from out at sea and had often wanted to visit.

Today we did the walk up to the lighthouse and it was great to look out from it. The balcony only goes half way up but it was great to look south towards Broughton Island where we caught a lot of snapper in the distance as well as the north and south headlands of Port Stephens called Tomaree and Yacaaba.

Brought back some great memories

Went for a drive into Bulahdelah today for a look and called into the bakery.

We both had a steak & kidney pie and they would have to have the most kidney I have ever had on a shop bought pie.

Check them out if ever down this way.

It is dying Aart. Lots of empty building in the Main Street. Town is very unkempt. The free Lions Park camping area is closed and fenced off with No Camping signs everywhere.

Was quite sad to see it all actually.

Pulled into Roses Park at Thora for the night. Has been quite a bit of rain in recent times and the grassed area was wet and full of bog holes so we stayed on the hard stuff down the bottom.

The new toilet block is great.

This is no longer a donation site and Bellingen Council now maintain it.

Running repairs. Pulled in here and a bloke followed me in and told me my lights on the trailer were not working.

Pulled the plug off and the earth pin disintegrated in my hand. Off to Bellingen and bought a new plug and wired it in.

Pays to carry an assortment of tools on the road. All good now.

I carry spares for just about everything including a spare diesel heater Roll Eyes

but have never in my fifty odd years of towing needed a trailer plug before. Just goes to show.

Every now and then you come across a gem and this place is one.

We are about 6klm out of Inverell at a free camp called Brodies Plains on the banks of the MacIntyre River.

The area is about a 200 metres long grassed area. There is a rubbish bin, a shelter shed and the remains of a couple of old BBQ’s.

Appears to be no rules. Online comments suggest people stay for weeks at a time.

I understand there are cod in the river.

Limited internet with Optus.

The view from our bedroom window will be amazing to wake up to. Staying a couple of nights.

So nice sitting here watching the water birds and listening to the sounds of nature.

Just clicked on my solar/battery system to find it 100% charged with the solar dribbling in a few amps.

Drove into town before and filled my two 20 litre water bottles up. May just stay an extra night here.

We have arrived at Yetman and stopped the night. Been here before and some of you would remember we have had a couple of camp oven gatherings here.

It is called a caravan park but just nice mowed grass around the tennis court. Full facilities including power, water, toilets, showers and a washing machine. Dump point is a couple of hundred metres away in a park.

$20 a night payable in cash at the local post office.

The village has a shop/post office and a pub.

After Maggie’s efforts with a stick toasting bread over the coals I bought a telescopic toasting fork from eBay. This one will stay in the motorhome.

My view while I am sitting out under the awning. Such a lot of bird life around here. None in the photo now but I love the Red-rumped Parrots feeding on the grass seeds.

In a nice shady spot but the temperature eased up around 34 degrees but should start cooling off soon. Going down to 13 overnight.

That is what we reckon Kevvie.

On this trip the drain from the shower has slowed right down. Last night Maggie had her shower and said, the flow has stopped completely. So there I was in the dark on my back underneath pulling pipes apart last night and guess what? Undid one and got covered in water. At least it was warm Grin

I have always known the pipes were not large enough annd block easily. Usually it is hair. I replaced the ones from the sink when we were in WA last year.

Looks like another job when we get home. Cheesy

We are home and that is most likely our last trip this year.

We took some backroads coming home and drove through Leyburn. Not that far north of the town we started to notice a few feral goats on the side of the road, then coming around a corner e would have been a mob in excess of a 100 of them. If we are seeing that many beside the road there must be a lot more out there. Didn’t know the mobs had moved so far east.

Have done most of the mowing.
