Went to grandparents day at school today on the northside of Brisbane.  On the way home I spied the Weber Shop at Jindalee so decided to go in and have a look.

Fatal mistake because this is what I walked out with.

Maggie said, “If you get a new one it has to be red”.  I said, “Why, I doubt you will be cooking on it and I like the new blue colour”.  To which she said, “No, but I have to look at it”.  She wins.  Grin Grin

I bought the same attachments I have with the old one. The half solid plate and the convection plate.

Apart from the different shape, control knob on the front and the drip tray sliding out the front it is also bigger.

Using my old ones for size difference, there are three photos showing the difference in size of the grills, the half plate and the convection tray.  While not significant I know that difference will certainly be a bonus.

Original had the folding side trays and on this one they clip on which will be handy when having to fold it up hot.  Side tables also have hooks for hanging utensils.

It barely fits on the old table but will do.   Smiley

Because I will be connecting it to my bayonet point on the motorhome I also bought the new flame out device to keep it legal.  This needs either 12 or 240 volts to operate so will need to work on that.  Most likely a 12 volt outlet will be the go.

Now to retire and sell my old one that is 11 years old.  Folks in the Weber Shop were quite surprised when I told them how old it is.

Time to get cooking.   Smiley

Derek where does the "flame out divise" fit on your motorhome and how much did it set you back?

Brian, it goes on the BBQ itself. Will install and take photo in next couple of days.

It retails for $199. I got 10% off.

To keep the new Weber Baby Q legal when connected to the motorhome with a bayonet connection it is now a requirement that the BBQ has a flame failure device.  The Weber one os called flame IQ.

As mentioned above I did buy one and it requires either 240 or 12 volts to operate it.  I do have an external 240 volt point but no 12 volt for when we are off grid.

Yesterday picked up a 12 volt cigarette style plug as the IQ comes with that plug.

Always nervous about drilling holes in the external walls but today I did it.

Currently waiting for the sealer to dry off before screwing it to the wall.  It is placed just above the gas bayonet point which is underneath the side panel.

All starting to come together.

Bit of work involved.
How will I go with my Weber, that can't be retro-fitted with such a device.

New legislation enforceable from I think around October 2022 on those Weber models that have it marked on the rear label as in photo so yours should be ok.

Mind you they do sell a flame failure device now for the older Baby Q models.

Started to fit the flame failure today.  Not as simple a task as I think it should have been.  In fact I would suggest the device possibly made in a different factory to the BBQ.

Managed to get it together and when I plugged it in it blew a fuse so it is all still sitting outside.   Grin.

Will try again tomorrow.  Would not be surprised if I clipped the two wires in the back of the plug on the wrong tabs.   Embarrassed

First photo before fitting and other two of the unit itself.  She’s a flash looking thing.

We are up and running.  Seems I had a faulty one.  Ended up back at Weber and they swapped for another that we tested in the shop.

Green on/off switch is on and the blue flame detected is going.  Currently doing its first preheat.

Inside photo shoes the sensor combined with a second electronic starter.  How this works is that if the flame goes out it will attempt to relight the BBQ three times over about 10 seconds.  If that doesn’t work then it locks the gas out and the second green button lights up.  It then needs a reset.

Has another feature in that if you forget to turn it off it has a built in 8 hour timer that automatically turns it off.  Personally think that is too long.

You may notice on the burner it has a second line of holes.  This is for extra heat in this model as there were a lot of complaints the older ones didn’t get hot enough to properly sear steaks.

Testing, testing today to see what different heats I might get.  The low temps I am very interested in.

Might cook dinner tonight on it.

Time to get packing and sorting for Glenreagh next week.  👍
